During the weeks of June 4 and 11, Salaam Shalom: Report on Palestine/Israel will devote most of the program to a showing of “Eyewitness Gaza,” a documentary by Tom Jackson. At the center of the film is Skip Schiel, an American Quaker activist, teacher and photographer, who has traveled extensively in Gaza and recorded with his camera the perilous nature of life in the occupied and besieged territory, including the murderous consequences of Israel’s invasion of Gaza, “Operation Cast Lead,” in December 2008 and January 2009. Central to the film are the lives, suffering and dreams of Gazan youth. This episode will also feature a musical video of a performance of the song “The New Black,” which has the distinction of being the first musical collaboration between South Africa and Palestine. The song was recorded by a South African band, The Mavrix, and Palestinian Oud player, Mohammed Omar. It was inspired by the events of Operation Cast Lead and, subsequently, by the novel Mornings in Jenin, written by Susan Albuhawa. Special thanks to our long-time technical producer, Danny Weiss, producer Bill Coil, and VTJP webmaster Jamie Brooks.
